George Bernard Shaw wrote:
"People are blaming their circumstances for what they are. I do not believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they don't find them, they create them."
Much later, Peter Senge wrote this:
"... there is a world of difference between compliance [to a vision] and commitment. The committed person brings an energy, passion, and excitement that cannot be generated by someone who is only compliant, even genuinely compliant. The committed person doesn't play by the rules of the game. He is responsible for the game. If the rules of the game stand in the way of achieving the vision, he will find ways to change the rules. A group of people truly committed to a common vision is an awesome force."
Here's an exercise for your team: compare and contrast these quotes... which MBM mental models apply? (hint: you might consider "Rules of Just Conduct" - are the "circumstances" and "rules" commands / detailed or general / laws?). Which dimensions of the MBM Framework shed light? (what about "Vision" or "Virtue and Talent"?) Which MBM Guiding Principles apply? ("Value Creation? How?). After your discussion with your team, maybe you could post the highlights in the comments for everyone else to see.
