If you haven't seen this clip from "Late Night with Conan O'Brian," which is a segment of an interview with comedian Louis C.K., you might get a kick out of it...
It's difficult sometimes to remember just how much better off we really are because of economic freedom. I think it was Don Boudreaux, in an EconTalk discussion with Russ Roberts, who pointed out a while ago that if you yearn for simpler times, it's not so hard to experience them -- a day or two of travel, or buying some property in the sticks and trying to grow and make everything yourself. It's harder for those experiencing (or trapped in) those conditions to go the other way.
Once freedom is lost, it's hard to get back. Poverty is easy - it's the natural condition. You can have it anytime you want it. Prosperity, well-being and peace is much harder to attain - as individuals, communities and societies. Be aware, be thankful... and be vigilant.
