This week the Associates are reading Peter Senge's The Fifth Discipline, the chapter called "Shared Vision." I like how this chapter opens. Senge describes this famous scene from the movie Spartacus:
Then, Senge writes, "But the loyalty of Spartacus's army was not to Spartacus the man. Their loyalty was to a shared vision which Spartacus had inspired -- the idea that they could be free men. This vision was so compelling that no man could bear to give it up and return to slavery" (page 206).
I try to use multimedia whenever I can, but sometimes it's hard to tie ideas to movies. What do you think about this illustration of shared vision? Do you have any other movies/blogs/tv shows/whatnot that would make good illustrations of vision or the concepts in the vision dimension?
I'm not convinced that this clip fully illustrates Senge's point. Maybe I am misinterpreting the various facial expressions and cues from the actors, but it seems more like they don't want to abandon Spartacus than that they don't want to go back to slavery.
This suggests to me that they all share a high degree of loyalty to Spartcus. Perhaps that is the content of their "shared vision?"
Caveat: I have not seen the movie.
